This report gives an overview of food inflation dynamics, its associated causes and the cost of basic healthy eating for August 2021.
Inflation on food and non-alcoholic beverages for August 2021 was higher than expected, at 6.9%, with an increasing trend observed from February 2021.
Among food categories, oils / fats (+21.3% year-on-year) and meat (+10.7%) exhibited the most significant inflation.
Main driving forces of food inflation continued to include high global commodity prices, exchange rate depreciation, animal disease outbreaks, rising input costs and the influence of the unrest in KwaZulu-Natal.
The cost of the BFAP Thrifty Healthy Food Basket amounted to R2 939 in August 2021 for the reference family of 2 adults and 2 children.
