Food Inflation Brief – August 2021

This report gives an overview of food inflation dynamics, its associated causes and the cost of basic healthy eating for August 2021.

  • Inflation on food and non-alcoholic beverages for August 2021 was higher than expected, at 6.9%, with an increasing trend observed from February 2021.
  • Among food categories, oils / fats (+21.3% year-on-year) and meat (+10.7%) exhibited the most significant inflation.
  • Main driving forces of food inflation continued to include high global commodity prices, exchange rate depreciation, animal disease outbreaks, rising input costs and the influence of the unrest in KwaZulu-Natal.
  • The cost of the BFAP Thrifty Healthy Food Basket amounted to R2 939 in August 2021 for the reference family of 2 adults and 2 children.
